| 4-H members took their parents out Saturday, May 10th for a fun morning of fishing competition at Selby Pond in St. Francisville. Mr. John Kean hosted the event for the second year in a row. “4-H Take a Parent Fishing Day” was started last May partly to reduce bream populations in Mr. Kean’s pond. This year, 4-H’ers were allowed to keep not only bream, but also the bass and catfish they caught.
Mr. Kean passed out bait donated by Tip and Beth Pace of Feliciana Seafood, as well as refreshments which he provided himself. He also had fishing equipment donated by Bowie Outfitters in Baton Rouge, which he handed out as prizes for the most fish caught by top student-parent teams.
Emma and Lee Hopkins won first place with 25 fish. Averi and David Young took second place with 22 fish. Third place was a tie between Toler and Staci Beauchamp and Sarah and Wilson Nunnery, with 11 fish for each team. A special lifetime achievement award was also given to Ms. Mattie Floyd, who fished with her granddaughter Amanda Vaughn. Ms. Floyd has had not only children, but also grandchildren in the West Feliciana 4-H program.
Students and parents alike seemed to enjoy the time together fishing. Having fresh-caught dinner and new fishing gear were pleasant extra perks.
