Minutes from Meetings
The Tangipahoa Parish 4-H Advisory Committee met June 11, 2008 at Mike’s Catfish Inn in Amite. Committee members present included: Christina Verberne, 4-H Leader Loranger High; Nancy Talley, Parent/Advisor on the Fashion, Food & Fitness Board; Amanda Talley, 4-H member / State Fashion Board; Beth Scarmado, 4-H Leader / Advisor on Fashion, Food & Fitness Board; Dara Stewart, 4-H member / State Food & Fitness Board; Rudi Darouse, 4-H member; David Brandon (representing Jan Brandon), parents; Alice DuBois, FFA leader Ponchatoula High; Sandra Bailey-Simmons, Tangipahoa Parish School Board member; Dakota Jenkins, 4-H member; Deborah Jenkins, parent/ volunteer leader and Tyra Storkey, parent / volunteer leader and Dr. Peter Cannizzaro, Regional 4-H Director.
JoAnna and Chic welcomed the group and had everyone introduce themselves. Chic gave an overview of the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service, which is a part of the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center. Chic also stated the purpose and roles of Advisory Committees is to keep the programs relevant to the students, leaders and parents. To advise as to how the 4-H department and Extension can improve and/or change to help make this parish 4-H program stronger and better. Using Shooting Sports as one of the major points, trying to establish a certified leader in the Parish to keep the agents more up to date as to the happenings and events in the Shooting Sports competitions and to keep track of the members involved better than before.
Chic stated that Jeff Addison, leader/volunteer, offered his services to get certified and become the Tangipahoa Parish leader of the Shooting Sports Program and Deborah Jenkins volunteered her services as secretary to help him out.
The Fashion, Food & Fitness program going stronger with more participation from the members of the State Board members of Tangipahoa Parish.
The 4-H situation was discussed by the group. Tangipahoa Parish has 1000 4-H Club members in 27 organized 4-H Clubs. The elementary clubs make up 67% of the members, Junior High 15% and High School 18%. There are no organized 4-H Clubs at Hammond Westside, Hammond Junior High, Kentwood Junior High and Senior High Schools. Contacts will continue to be made in an effort to form 4-H Clubs at these schools. Ms. Sandra Bailey-Simmons stated that she would try to get the school board’s help in keeping some of the schools that would grow with a 4-H program in their curriculum.
JoAnna / Chic also spoke about the upcoming “Service Learning Project” being incorporated into the 4-H programs thru Ms. Carol Franze, Associate Area Agent working in ANR/Sea Grant. This would involved the children getting together at the different schools and growing coastal plants, to help save our coastal areas in the parish. Working along with the FFA clubs and 4-H clubs together. The younger grades could start the plants and have the older club members going out to the areas and planting these plants. All school grades working together. This would be one of the major programs for our Junior Leaders Program.
Tangipahoa Parish Junior Leaders program is a “long term service and leadership program.” Where as, they could hold workshops to teach the younger members how things should be done, such as Record Book keeping, doing their Portfolio’s for Achievement Day and showing them the leadership that evolves from 4-H.
JoAnna also went over the changes and/or improvements that the committee wanted to see happen last year and a good many of those did get changed and were improved, such as:
Cookery: Provide students with copies of their score sheets of judged dish or dishes. All copies are in the office for any student wishing to see their scores.
Achievement Day:  Shooting Sports could not happen in 2008 due to small participation numbers in members having completed or even receiving their project books.  Keep Achievement Day at the arena.
Pet Parade:  More judges were gotten for this event and this year was very successful.
4-H U:  Our numbers for 4-H U for 2008 have doubled.
Camp: Sent out camp invitations earlier and have doubled our numbers from last year as well.
Some changes and/or improvements still open for the coming year: Cookery: Trying to get a larger area for the cookeries.
Fair: Try to get a new list out to the members earlier which have all the contests that the 4-H members can enter. Not all members and/or parents know what else is available to their children besides the 4-H exhibits. Limiting the number of entries per member to just 20 for the entire 4-H entry list, not one in every category. Trying to be fair to those who cannot compete in all listings. The members could enter more but they would only get credit for 20 items, for overall competition which goes into consideration for Achievement Day as well.
Achievement Day: Point system: limiting points for livestock members who show in parish, district / or state shows and also all the open shows and wherever else they may participate to help their numbers go up for overall winners at Achievement Day. To make it fair for those who don’t show livestock and participate all over the states.
The 4-H member will only get points for showing in 4-H Parish, District and State Shows. Doesn’t matter how many animals you show but these will be the only shows that you can accumulate points in. This will be discussed more at the club meetings with the 4-H members.
Shooting Sports: Will be added next year and will be an open contest to 4 members per club.
Christina Verberne discussed briefly with the committee on how the new EOC testing next year will effect when Achievement Day will be offered. This new testing will be latter part of April into first days of May and will included many of the schools and clubs that attend Achievement Day. So JoAnna / Chic are looking into a better date somewhere around the first or second week in May, 2009 for Achievement Day because without these schools participation we cannot hold a successful Achievement Day.
The meeting adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
