Packing Ice Chests Safely
Headed to the beach? Spending the day on the lake? If you plan to do any of these activities, you most likely will be taking an ice chest along as well. Many times we don't consider how important it is to pack our ice chest safely to ensure that we reduce the risk of food-borne illness. Here are a few tips for keeping your food safe while having your summer fun.
- Make sure all items are stored in leak-proof containers.
- Package meats and other hazardous foods in a separate cooler if possible.
- Pack foods in cooler first and put your cold source on top. Cold air is denser and will "sink" to the bottom
- Make sure you keep condiments such as ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard and relish in the cooler once they have been opened.
- Large "zip-type" bags filled with ice make great ice packs and are much easier for cleanup.
