| Agriculture
LSU AgCenter agronomist Jay Stevens presented a fertilizer program to twenty-three local producers who learned about fertilizing their crops, costs and saving money when using fertilizer.
Homeowners were advised on fertilizer and insect recommendations in order to better understand how to take care of their lawns and gardens.
Hay producers learned how soil testing and irrigation are important to increasing production and obtaining a wider profit margin.
A corn core variety plot is being monitored. Producers will use the variety results from this plot when making their row crop decisions for the 2009 growing season.
4-H
Approximately 400 youth learned about leadership and how good leaders contribute to their schools, communities, state and world during the April 4-H club meetings.
4-H Junior Leaders assisted teachers, instructors and students during the Farm Safety Day for fourth grade, Forestry Awareness Day for fifth grade and taught character education lessons to students during the Health Awareness Day for sixth grade.
To celebrate the 100th birthday of the Louisiana 4-H program, the Caldwell Parish 4-H program along with the Caldwell Parish Farm Bureau held a reception at the Schepis Museum. Several 4-H alumni were present to speak about the 4-H program and a presentation of the 4-H Hall of Fame Award was given to this year's recipient Patricia Russell.
One high school and four junior high 4-H members attended this year's TEAM Camp held at the Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center in Pollock where they learned leadership, communication and team building skills through a variety of hands-on activities taught by several agents from the Northeast area.
Four Caldwell Parish 4-H'ers were eligible to attend the 2008 4-H State Ambassador Talk Contest held on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge where 4-H'ers from across the state presented illustrated talks on Louisiana commodities. Kirsten Carson was the state winner in the Division I Chicken Ambassador Talk Contest. Tyler Duchesne was the second place winner in the Division I Turkey Ambassador Talk Contest and Meagan McCaa and Kelsey Cassels were blue ribbon winners in each of their contests.
Forty-one 4-H'ers and their pets participated in the 4-H Pet Show where they were interviewed on their knowledge of animal care, nutrition, exercise and training.
Many 4-H'ers and 4-H leaders were recognized at this year's 4-H Awards Night. Among those honored were 17 4-Star Club members, 4-H scholarship winner Abby Hart, Union Central 6th Grade Club, Columbia 4th Grade Club, the top 4th, 8th and 12th grade 4-H'ers and the Key Club and Award of Excellence winners.
4-H agents Sandra Russell and Jim McCann along with intern Katie Ray, one volunteer leader, five 4-H Junior Leaders and 77 4-H'ers traveled to Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center for this year's 4-H Camp. This weeklong adventure gave youth the opportunity to engage in many interactive activities with 4-H'ers from six other parishes.
Ten 4-H'ers attended this year's 4-H University held on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge where they competed against 4-H'ers from across the state. Congratulations to Lacey Barnette, Maranda Weems, Tara Bratton, Ryan McCann and Neil Cubbit for being blue ribbon winners at this event.
4-H agent Sandra Russell along with 45 4-H'ers, leaders and parents traveled to Baton Rouge for 4-H Day at the Capitol where 4-H'ers attended an assembly on the Capitol steps, visited with Senator Neil Riser and toured the state Capitol.
Family Nutrition Program
Students at the Caldwell Parish Pre-Kindergarten and Head Start made a "Garden in a Glove" using cotton balls, a variety of vegetable seeds, a disposable glove and a little water. After the garden was put together, students hung the glove in a window and waited for the seeds to sprout. The students learned the importance of growing their own vegetable gardens and making fresh, healthy foods from what they grow at home.
During the April commodity distribution, 31 recipients received nutrition information from the USDA curriculum series "Loving Your Family, Feeding Their Future." Participants in the April and June Food for Seniors distribution received nutrition information on the "Healthy Benefits of Seafood" and "What's on Hand."
The Caldwell Parish Health Unit and Office of Family Support displays focused on the importance of making "Thrifty Choices."
Parents learned about "MyPyramid" and "Summer Food Safety" during the April and May Caldwell Parish Head Start parent meetings.
