Agriculture

One thousand youth and adults learned about horse safety, major uses for horses, colors of horses and equipment used in the horse industry at the Equine Education Alley at Ag Expo.

One corn core block demonstration was planted at Lelon Kenney's farm in Caldwell Parish to evaluate corn varieties so that producers will be able to make better planting decisions for the upcoming year.

Approximately 80 youth learned about horsemanship, nutrition, safety, record books and horse health during the North Louisiana Horse Camp held in West Monroe.

Five hundred youth attended Ag Adventures in Delhi where they learned about horse safety, horse equipment and horse needs.

Eight home gardeners learned about sweet potatoe varieties, planting dates and yields.

Eighteen cattle and forage producers learned about summer grasses, fertilizer rates and soil testing.

4-H

During monthly club meetings, approximately 400 youth learned how to effectively delegate tasks, accept differences among different people in a group and resolve conflicts.

4-H agent Sandra Russell provided educational materials and presentations on the cotton and rice industries to over 1700 youth and adults during Ag Alley at Ag Expo and Ag Adventures in Delhi.

Tyler Duchesne, a Columbia elementary 4-H'er appeared on KNOE TV 8's "What's Cookin'?" with Stacy Thorton where he demonstrated making a dish and helped respond to callers as they tried to guess the name of his recipe. Tyler was eligible to appear on the show after winning "Best of Show" for the 2007 4-H Holiday Foods Festival.

Patricia Russell, a 4-H volunteer for over 21 years, was inducted into the Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame. She is one of the first 100 inductees chosen statewide who will be featured in the state 4-H Museum in Avoyelles Parish.

Members of the 4-H Junior Leader Club met monthly at the Haven Nursing Home where they presented character education lessons to kindergarten through second grade students and played games with the residents.

Members of the 4-H Fashion, Food and Fitness Club participated in a Scavenger Hunt at Pecanland Mall where they worked in groups to find two outfits that were appropriate for a given situation. They learned how to be wise consumers when purchasing clothing for different events.

Thirty-seven billboards promoting milk and milk products were submitted in this year's 4-H Draw-a-Dairy billboard contest.

Nealy McCoy, Ally Brown, Presley Hendrix, Blake Sanford, Tara Taylor, Tyler Duchesne, Kirsten Carson and Austin Roark represented Caldwell Parish during the 2008 Northeast Area 4-H Cookery contest.

Twenty-one 4-H'ers competed in the Demonstration, Personal Development and Ambassador talk contests during Communications and Career Day.

Family Consumer Science

Extension agent Dana Gillett taught the Character Critters curriculum to teachers at the Caldwell Preschool Center. She also provided copies of the Critters story books for all preschool students.

Family Nutrition Program

Students and teachers in 5th and 6th grade classes at Union Central elementary learned new ways to make healthy snacks using MyPyramid. They practiced putting their own snacks together during the nutrition lesson which included "Peanut Butter Crackers" and Fruit and Cheese Kabobs." Students at Union Central also learned about the nutritional benefits of the milk and meat group of MyPyramid.

Pre-Kindergarten students learned about the fruit and milk group of MyPyramid. To encourage them to eat more fruit and dairy products, the students sampled foods from each food group during the lesson.

Caldwell Head Start children learned about the milk, meat and bean groups of MyPyramid.
