The W. A. Callegari Environmental Center

fix
The facility houses a newly constructed analytical laboratory for analyses of water samples using current Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality certified methods from agricultural sources and feedstock/compost analyses for the USCC Seal of Testing Assurance using the Test Methods for Analysis of Composting and Compost.
fix
In addition to laboratory services, the facility offers research facilities for invessel composting and large-scale windrow composting research and sufficient space for biomass energy demonstration, biomass beneficial use and other organic waste recycling research projects.
fix
We also provide valuable solid waste management training for municipalities, agriculture and industrial organic waste generators, and will soon provide waste water treatment installation training, complete with a walk through demonstration of various waste water treatment systems.
Organic byproduct (biomass) management includes two possible scenarios; disposal or beneficial use.  Decreasing landfill capacities and increased regulatory issues related to water (water pollution) and air quality (gaseous emissions) have increased restrictions on disposal and use of many organic byproducts from agricultural, industrial and municipal sources.

MISSION

The mission of the W. A. Callegari Environmental Center is to provide valuable expertise, applied research capabilities, public education and analytical resources in response to expressed public needs and concerns relating to organic-byproduct management and water quality, the protection of our environment, providing the necessary link between research and public education.

Services of the Callegari Center include:

The W. A. Callegari Environmental Center is located on an 8-acre site at the LSU AgCenter’s Central Research Station south of Baton Rouge. The facility includes an 8,500-square-foot building that houses the Organic Degradation Research Laboratory, the newly constructed water quality laboratory, offices, a meeting room and storage area. Next to the building is a 3-acre composting pad.
